Growing Up

Updated: Jan 19, 2024

As a kid do you remember when a teacher or family member asked you what you wanted to be when you grow up? Or you can be what ever you heart desires? I remember being asked this exact question. I know this is something I had asked my kids at different ages and Loved the different responses I got. I am sure just like you as you got older what you wanted to be in life changed. (Just so you know Ashlynn is not a PowerPuff Girl and Paul-Jakob is not a Power Ranger).

Did any one ever ask you what steps or goals you needed to take to obtain your dream career? Did they ever say to be prepared for Hard Work, Determination and Commitment?

I can almost guarantee they did not. They listened to what you wanted to be and smiled and gave you a big hug.

Let's go back.....back into time!

Going back to 1994, a senior in High School (I cannot remember what class) we had a teacher ask what our next 10 years looked like? What did we want to accomplish? What would we be doing as a career? Would we be successful?

There were a list of questions we had to answer in this essay that we had to envision what our next 10 years would look like.

I spent a lot of time thinking this through. Would I be married? would I have kids? Would I even go to College? At the time I wanted to Own a salon and do hair and makeup for every one I knew. I had no idea how what it took to own or run a business. I mean lets be real, scooping ice cream and straightening shoes didn't really prepare me for accounting, business management or where to even start. I didn't even know how to balance a checkbook. I really didn't have any plans of going to College. I imagined just walking into a bank and they were going to hand me a big check and give me all the people needed to take care of making sure my salon was perfect! Hey! be nice I can hear you laughing.

I was just having fun and it was nice having my own money. But this essay really got me thinking.

I figured I would write this essay and write what I would like my life to be. On this paper I had my life together, and it was a super fun life. I had the nicest car, the best apartment, my friends and I took glamorous trips together (every month), I had all this and only worked from noon - 5 Monday through Friday.

HELLO!!! I can hear you laughing again.

Anyway...Moving on

I can still remember looking at the paper, pretty proud of myself because I had gotten an A. The teacher left a couple notes on how I should watch running sentences and that it looked like I had a good life ahead.

I sat there a little confused, a little mad, scared and determined. That life was just a dream and memory just like the paper I wrote.

What kept me from me wanting to own a Salon? No one ever asked what goals or steps I would take to get there. So it remained a dream and my life went on.

Just so you know I never opened a Salon (Do you know how many hours they are on their feet) It really wasn't for me. Why? Hard Work, Determination, Commitment.....and NO GOALS

After graduation I was not sure what to do. I did not go to college like many of my classmates but I did meet my husband and we were married 4 months after we met, May 27, 1995. Paul and I had two babies (three pregnancies) in the first 3 years of marriage. The question of what I wanted to be kept coming up in my thoughts . At this moment in life I wanted to be the best wife and mom to these little humans that we were blessed with.

This is where my goal setting started, and where the "family brain" came to life. (the family brain is my daily calendar that you will read about in future blogs)

I am going to fast forward to the present because I don't want to give you all the deets too soon

We are now Grandparents!!!!!!!!!.....................................................Thank you to my daughter

My Granddaughter wants to be a football player. Not just any football player but a Kansas City Chiefs football player. (I am not holding this against her considering I am a New Orleans Saints Fan). She loves to practice with anyone that will let her tackle them. But come Saturday morning when it comes time to put on her pink tights and her ballet shoes, she becomes a prima ballerina and can't wait to see her dance teacher. Can she seriously think she can be a football player and a ballerina? Of course she can! I look forward to the day to watching her perform on the Nutcracker stage or playing football on a Saturday morning. Until then Paul and I agree we will help her set goals to be the best she can be.

What are your dreams? Have you made goals to turn your dreams into reality?

Just a Reminder, Dreams do not work unless you do!

So with that being said, GET TO WORK!
